Reconditioned, refurbished, restored, rebuilt?
It’s the length of a piece of string, and there are some woolly definitions out there..At one end of the scale, a fully-rebuilt instrument will be more or less as-new, with more or less everything – including the soundboard – carefully restored or replaced. At the other end of the scale, a recent instrument from a good maker should need very little work doing on it.
Overstrung, underdamped – what’s all that about?
In general, the better models of pianos are overstrung – that is, the treble and bass strings cross over making a sort of “x” shape, This allows for a longer length of string in a given space, means a more heavily-engineered construction, and in consequence a fuller and richer sound. Mass-produced straight-strung pianos tend to be of inferior quality – on the other hand, there are some very nice early 20th-century straight-strung instruments by high-end makers such as Bechstein, Bluthner and Lipp which are well worth considering.
Overdamped instruments have their dampers above the hammers – closer to the ends of the strings – so they’re less effective. Ideally, an upright piano should be overstrung, underdamped. Remember that one!
